About the Author
St. Ignatius of Loyola was born in 1491 in Guipuzcoa in the Basque country. He was brought up in the household of Ferdinand and Isabella as head treasurer and joined the army in 1517. This book has been an amazing exercise of and for my faith!! The timing was nothing short of perfectly providential, and has enlightened me to the deeper truths of living a life lived for God alone, and how in doing so, aligns everything up within us to live just as He has designed us to, in order to bring glory to Him in EVERYTHING we think, say and do.... Not to mention the grace to get right back up when we slip, trip or fall!! I highly recommend this book to any one interested in taking your faith to the next level, which just so happens to work by taking us deeper into our faith while at the same time ascending our hearts and souls to heights unimaginable!!! Awesome....
Good translation. Easy to read although there are passages and definitions which are dated. All the editions in Spanish I was able to preview use the old 16th century Spanish, which apparently was his second language. I always go for the original if its in Spanish, French, or English. First time I chose to buy a traslation.I was told by my pastor not to attempt a retreat by myself but in a retreat center or meeting once a week with a spiritual director for about 30 weeks. I guess people who are approaching this work intellectually, like for an MA in theology, can profit from this book in class or independent study.

Looking for something different and delicious in stir-fry? This is your book. We've made several of the recipes and loved everyone. All ingredients are easily found at the grocery, and inexpensive. The author describes the dish before she lists the cooking instructions which I find helpful. She also lists prep and cook times for each recipe which I like, however, I have found that the prep times for me are about twice as long. That being said about 80-85% of the prep times are 10 minutes and under.
I bought the book because I enjoy her TV shows. Sadly, the recipes in this book are not very enjoyable.Every recipe I tried in this book needs adjustments. I made about half the recipes in this book and I have yet to come across a great tasting one. They are mostly one-dimensional in taste and range from too salty to too sour to too bland. All of the dishes came out tasting more like something a home cook whips up at the last minute than something you actually paid money to replicate.For an equally easy to make dishes, but with vastly superior results, try the book by Diana Kuan instead. The two books have many similar dishes, but the flavours are amazing for most of the dishes in that book.
I bought the kindle version and I love it because I make stir frys a lot and using the techniques in this little book has really made my recipes special.
Great recipes and photos but not for my family of 5. All the recipes serves 2 and you’ll need a scale to weigh all your food.

The recipes look good, but every single dish calls for chilis and it never explains what kind of chilis these are nor where they can be purchased.Always the same chilis. Frustrating! Seems small but it can make a difference in how the dishes are to taste.
Bought for my wife. she has used it several times.
About every other page has a 3/4 page color photo of the dish but the quality of the photo isn’t good, not clear and the colors are dull.Each recipe gives you a quick peek of how much prep time and cook time is needed as well as vegetarian, vegan, deep fried etc icons? I have no idea as I couldn’t find the legend for these icons (see my photo); but this is better than the typical written form though.Overall it provides a good but basic explanation of some wok tips, order of ingredients to be added into the wok, and glossary of ingredients which should be helpful for most.As for the recipes themselves, many of them are Sichuan based recipes and those that weren’t, were pretty basic, untypical and just didn’t appeal to my taste and I’m Chinese.

Amazing book and Savulich's eye is anything but usual. A real treat for those who enjoy the darker side of things.
A gripping look at New York City as it was at the time.
A bike messenger bleeds form the mouth after being punched by a cab driver. In another photo, a building doorman tackles a pickpocket on the hood of a cab. A subway passenger sits on the floor of the car, tended to by transit police after being stabbed. The other riders pay no attention. Andrew Savulich photographed the city for the Daily News since the 1980’s, mostly as a freelancer. Most of this photos from the time never got printed. The photos in this book display the sleazy, dangerous, and dirty side of New York life, most of which have never been seen before. One of the most controversial photos in this book from Steidl is of a woman, sitting in a crushed car, smiling. She looks like she’s nuts, given the destruction all around her. Is she drunk? On drugs? Knocked silly from the impact? Whatever the reason for her out of place levity, it’s the perfect example of the insanity of the city at the time. When I see these photos from the city’s bad old days, I can remember the combination of danger and excitement. It wasn’t a place for the dainty. Savulich isn’t much of a self-promoter, which is why I’d never heard of him until I saw this book. He was a Rutgers-trained architect, worked in Boston, then came to NYC to pursue a career in photography. He worked in construction while going to grad school for art, then began getting freelance assignments from tabloid papers. Nowadays the tabloids are on their way out thanks to the internet and the inability to shock people. As for Savulich’s photos, a whole lot of them had to be kept off the press because they were considered too edgy. But thanks to Steidl, we can see them in all their (dirty) glory. Seeing these photos takes me back 30 years, to a time when New York City was dangerous, dark, and filthy. However, under all the grime, people still went to work, ate out, came home, got their kids to school, and didn’t die. People lived here, some enjoyed the city, some hated it. The 80’s and early 90’s in New York are remembered with nostalgia, even though the city wasn’t as much fun as it is now. Then again, even in the most dangerous times, it was much more exciting than the Long Island suburbs. Perhaps that’s why I loved coming here so much? Perhaps that’s why I was dying to go to school in the city? Some people just love crowds, honking horns, shouting drivers, and the short walk to the grocery store. Those are the people you’re going to see in this book.

This may be one of the most powerful books I have read in the past decade, and I hope and pray that it receives an enormous readership. One reviewer thought that Rabbi Sacks may be "preaching to the choir" and not reaching those who perpetrate religious violence. I see the concern, especially given the events of the past week, but I don't share it. Rabbi Sacks' work in this book is truly prophetic in the tradition of prophets of biblical times, who were not predictors of the future, but rather inspired voices calling people to repentance and justice. They reminded the people of God’s amazing and steadfast faithfulness, as Rabbi Sacks does here. They offered not despair, but hope and a reminder of right relationship with G*d, by whatever name we choose to use for the Divine. If religion is to live into its potential as the source of hope, love and justice, then especially the children of Abraham--teachers, leaders, clergy and lay people--would do well to get re-inspired by this masterwork from a brilliant soul. Pick up this book, read it, and remember or learn how to put love into action for justice, instead of retribution or despair.
One can be forgiven for observing the basic disconnect between Monotheism as practised by Jews and Christians and Muslims as each has their own way of relating to Him. While the Christians generally support a triple embodiment, thus causing more than a little confusion regarding which one is really Him, the problem in Islam seems to be a function of the conflation of religion and politics/law which invests religious leaders with both state power and spiritual power, a mix we Jews understand through our own history to be perverting of the role He wants us to play in relation to His world. Rabbi Sachs has created a book thoroughly representative of his respect for the spiritual nature of man, but similarly analytical in finding the potential cause of this altruistic evil, a force which causes the most public function of Islam to betray the essence of Monotheism in pursuit of narrow and self-centred, dualistic objectives. The function of this latest book is to explore and explain through the view of modern thought as to how a group can claim to have origins in the life of Abraham and, yet, so thoroughly betray every principle for which he lived and in which he believed. If I may extrapolate from this excellent work, one is tempted to support the idea of an Islamic Reformation from the damage witnessed through the theocratic practices of today's Islamic states, a reality not likely to be accepted with anything short of the kind of warfare experienced in the wake of the Christian Reformation. However, if we are to pursue life in His name, it seems rather clear that excluding politics from religion may be one of the first steps to eliminating the current gruesome activities taking place not in His name.The book is absorbing, informative, and has a number of excellent and refreshing analyses of the traditional Torah interpretations of Genesis. I would recommend this as not just a book for Jews, but for all those willing to better understand the complex relationship between man's spiritual behaviour, his human relationships, and how those elements are realised by some within the framework of governance where the underlying religion does not support the public behaviour.Best of all, I can say I truly learned something from this well-researched and gentle dissection of otherwise grossly disturbing behaviours.

This is a pellucid distillation of McGee's knowledge about cooking, where every word is made to tell. It's something few writers could ever have managed. The section on vinaigrettes explains several more aspects of how they work, why you make them as you do, and how they might be injured and repaired than J. Kenji López-Alt's equivalent section of The Food Lab does, in a tenth as many words.So it's not rambling, discursive, anecdotal, or overlong, and the prose soars only a little, here and there, mainly at the chapter starts. But read with attention, it casts a delicious spell of clarity, and regularly achieves the goal of all true explanations: to make the familiar, strange. McGee has packed this beautifully designed book with thousands of little insights and pieces of advice that will make you cook better. It's a delight.My only dissatisfaction with the hardcover is that I wish the dust jacket had been reproduced on the surface of the book itself, and that the surface was glossy, to make it feel more like the kitchen-based book it is than a standard nonfiction offering (and that it had a sewn, not a glued, binding, as so many cookbooks do, for durability). But none of Penguin Press's books have those features, and as regular hardcover books go, it is very pleasingly printed, with thick, luxurious paper.
The second of Harold McGee's excellent resources on food preparation. This book is not as technical as his first, but very practical. It answers many how, what and why questions that arise as you prepare foods. It too is a reference even though it is for me easier reading than his "On Food and Cooking" book. When you want to know why something works or why it did not this is a valuable resource.

What is said on 550 pages could be said on 150 or less.I do not appreciate the self advertising on the cover and the first pages.The ratio of actual information, print and empty space on each page is appaling. The print and the binding are substandard.In between there are some useful ideas, but the editor has not done his or her job.
This book is very casual. I found it to be fairly random, and not as informative as I'm used to from Harold McGee.BUY "ON FOOD AND COOKING" INSTEAD. Its by the same author, and is a masterpiece. It covers every aspect of cooking to the very grittiest detail. The chapter on eggs begins with a detailed, scientific description of the chickens entire gestation period.Why is that important? Once you know what an egg is composed of you'll know why and how cooking it certain ways changes its characteristics. Once you know the chemistry and physics behind food and cooking you know EVERYTHING. No more rules of thumb or pointers, just genuine, fundamental knowledge.If you want simple rules of thumb, but no genuine knowledge, then buy this book. If you want the knowledge of an executive chef buy "On Food and Cooking" same author, different world.
If you've ever wondered why eggs are so special or why bread does or does not rise to your expectations...Harold McGee is the author for you. This book isn't about recipes as much as it's about good eating and learning how to cook. I think of it as raising the bar.
MY FRIEND AND NEIGHBOR IS A VERY HEALTH CONSCIOUS FOODIE. THIS BOOK WAS A PERFECT GIFT FOR HER TO ADD TO HER COLLECTION OF BOOKS ON FOOD. IT WAS AN AWESOME GIFT FOR A WONDERFUL FRIEND WHO SEEKS TO KNOW MORE ABOUT WHAT SHE PUTS IN HER MOUTH.
I enjoy using McGee's "Keys to Good Cooking. its information is useful, clear, and fairly copious, and as usual it debunks commonly held myths. the book takes the perspective of focusing on ingredients or types of ingedient and then the different means of preparing them and how any method affects the taste and texture. since I do more experimentation than recipe following, McGee's approach works well for me. it presents alternative ways to consider the taste or texture problem I am trying to solve, and so far has steered me in fruitful directions.if I could own just one book by McGee, it would still be the justly famous [[ASIN:0684843285 On Food and Cooking], which is a hard act to follow. nonetheless, I find the new volume a welcome addition and I refer to it frequently.one warning about the Kindle edition, however: the publisher made the index flat text without hyperlinks, so you can see what's in the book, but you can't get there from here. this is *REALLY* irritating; perhaps later editions will correct this lunacy.
I'm going to disagree with some other reviewers here. I have been been reading Mr McGee for many years, and regard myself as a huge fan.Few of his previous works would be suitable for the everyday cook. This one is. How many people would wade through his earlier erudite discussions of protein strings, just to get a practical morsel for the kitchen? Few indeed.This is a book that distills Mr McGee's work into a single practical volume. It may be "the size of a brick", but so what? Nor do I find the typography and layout disconcerting. I think they are ideal: they send you to the essential points immediately.I have sent this book to some of my friends who would never read even think to peruse Mr McGee's previous opuses. But I am sure they will at least leaf through this one.
